RARE BEATLES GUITAR SELLS FOR $408,000 AT  JULIEN’S
AUCTIONS MUSIC ICONS EVENT - TODAY IN NEW YORK

New York, New York  – May 18, 2013 – A rare VOX guitar
played by two legendary Beatles, John Lennon and George Harrison, has sold at
Julien’s Auctions today during the annual Music Icons auction event held at the
Hard Rock Café New York.  The rare offering of the VOX guitar played by both
John Lennon and George Harrison has been the focus of extraordinary major global
press as it made its way through several exhibitions prior to the auction. The
guitar was displayed at Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons in Ireland
and also The Stafford Kempinski Hotel in London before coming to New York where
it was on exhibit at the Hard Rock Café New York all this week. The striking
custom guitar built by Mike Bennett and Dickey Denney was gifted to “Magic Alex”
Mardas by John Lennon in 1967.  Harrison played the guitar while practicing “I
am the Walrus” during The Magical Mystery Tour and by Lennon while recording a
video session for “Hello, Goodbye.” The spectacular piece of Beatles history
sold for $408,000.

The bidding remained fast and furious throughout the entire day as Music
Icons also featured a collection of over 450 items of famed music memorabilia
including more items from The Beatles, Elvis Presley, King of Pop Michael
Jackson, Bette Midler, The Rolling Stones, David Cassidy, David Bowie, Bob
Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Madonna, Jimi Hendrix and many more.  Amongst the
other highlights of today’s auction were

 Unpublished early color photographs of the Beatles’ first U.S. tour will be sold at a U.K. auction. The photos were taken during the band’s 1964 visit to the U.S., when color film was expensive and most images of the group were in black and white. The collection of 65 slides contains many stage shots, including George Harrison with his legendary red Rickenbacker guitar and close-up portraits from a Las Vegas Sahara Hotel press conference and Las Vegas Convention Centre gig. The images were taken by Dr. Robert Beck, who died in 2002 and left them in an archive of photographs and slides in his Hollywood home. Omega Auctions said Sunday the images will be sold March 22nd – exactly 50 years after the Beatles released their first album.

The son of John Lennon says that the lead singer of U2’s eyesight is deteriorating. Julian Lennon told the Irish Daily Star that Bono’s eye condition, which makes him particularly sensitive to light, is getting worse. “Bono actually has a condition with his eyes,” said Lennon. “I don’t know the exact issue but the brightness of the sun hurts them and it’s a deteriorating issue.” He added of the singer’s trademark sunglasses, which are in part to combat the condition, “It’s part of his image. In some senses it was lucky but not really of course. Maybe it’s part of his process now and without the image he can’t be Bono.”
